A family legacy tracing back to 1876

El Catuai was founded by Isidro Pivaral Batres, a visionary in coffee exportation whose goal was to elevate the Guatemalan coffee industry and create a lasting legacy for his descendants. In 1876, Isidro stepped into the world of coffee by acquiring Finca La Concha, a farm that holds a significant place in the industry, as it was the first organic coffee milling facility for exports and the founder of OCIA in Guatemala.

As the industry flourished and foreign demand increased, Isidro acquired more land, El Limon, El Paraiso, and El Sauce, where he also introduced dairy cattle breeding, pineapple, corn, and avocado plantations. The group of farms, processing, and exporting facilities came together to form El Catuai, named after the distinctive Arabica coffee variety.

Today, El Catuaí stands as a pioneer in organic coffee farming, production, and export from Guatemala to the world.

OUR HISTORY

Guatemala's volcanic paradise, Fraijanes

The unique combination of volcanic pumice soil, high altitudes above 1,372 meters, ample rainfall, and variable humidity in Fraijanes creates an environment that imparts remarkable flavours to the coffee beans and results in a superior specialty cup Strictly Hard Bean quality. The region's active volcano, Pacaya, contributes to this flavour profile by occasionally dusting the land with a light deposit of ash, infusing the soil with essential minerals.

With each brew of Fraijanes coffee, you'll experience a harmonious balance of brightness, complexity, and captivating aromatics.

La Concha

La Concha was the first Organic farm in Guatemala, as well as the first farm forming part of El Catuai, dating back to 1987. In La Concha you can find coffee cultivations, our processing facilities, and high-quality grass-fed Brahman beef cattle and mule breeding in a separate area called Limon y Las Posas.

El Sauce

El Sauce is dedicated to grass-fed cattle and mule breeding. At El Sauce, we're actively implementing sustainable agroforestry initiatives by planting 900 trees within our expansive estate to promote biodiversity, preserve wildlife habitats, and mitigate climate change.

We are contributing to a net-zero world through GHG-efficient farming practices and technologies, community, and giving back.

GREEN COFFEE FOR A GREENER WORLD

At El Catuaí, we are driven by our deep commitment to empowering and uplifting our community. We believe in the power of collaboration and actively engage in initiatives that create lasting positive change. Through strategic partnerships with local organisations, we strive to address key social and environmental challenges.

Through our community involvement, we aim to improve livelihoods, support education, and foster sustainable development. Together, we can make a real difference and create a brighter future for our community and beyond.
